Information on Swaps

WHAT IS A FOOD SWAP?

A food swap is a recurring event where members of a community share homemade, homegrown foods and drinks with each other. Swaps allow direct trades to take place , e.g., a loaf of bread for a jar of pickles or a dozen backyard eggs. These events are a delicious way to diversify the homemade foods in your kitchen while getting to know members of your local food community.

WHAT TO EXPECT AT A SWAP?

Swaps last appx. 1 hour. We set up, set out samples and fill out swap info sheets. Next we introduce ourselves and tell we have to swap. Then we sample items and ask for a barter. Finally, swaps items are exchanged and we say goodbye. Lingering and chatting are also allowed :)

WHAT TO BRING?

Fresh veggies, fruits, herbs, and fresh flowers. Canned goods and preserves. Drinks such as tea, goats milk, kombucha. Baked goods and sweets. We also allow handmade body care and handcrafted items. Please bring samples and a list of ingredients.

HOW MUCH TO BRING?

Bring what you have available. You will leave with as much, sometimes more, than you came with. You can mix and match, bring some fresh items and/or preserves - whatever you have on hand!

Our first swap of 2013 was in May, it was a small but successful event. Some of the goodies swapped were: preserved Meyer lemons, Einkhorn wheat bread, whole grain muffins, hot salsa, bug spray, fresh oranges, lemons and herbs. Ooh and fresh out-of-the-earth-oven flatbread pizza from the Bumgarners!
